Use a soft brush on each affected page to remove any mold or mildew. Next lightly dampen the impacted area with hydrogen peroxide or diluted alcohol, applied with a clean towel or paper towel, to eliminate the opportunity for this fungus to regrow.
Are moldy books safe? While it is actively growing and reproducing, mold excretes digestive enzymes that alter, weaken, and stain paper, cloth, or leather. It is important to note that mold can be dangerous to people with allergies and immune problems and, in some cases, can pose a major health hazard.
Does freezing books kill mold? The best thing to do is to either freeze the volumes first if they are not too large and then rub them down again with alcohol or to simply remove the mold with alcohol. I recommend freezing them first to make removing it easier.
How do you get mildew stains out of books? To treat mildewed or moldy pages, place a sheet of wax paper under the infected page before you treat it. Remember, mold and mildew are both alive and contagious. Brush away the infection only after protecting the rest of the book and gently swab moldy spots with tiny amounts of denatured alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.
